There were few damage reports in Peru, Nicaragua, French Polynesia, Mexico or Hawaii. The tsunami arrived in Hawaii shortly before noon, local time, where reports indicated little damage. Three-foot surges have also been reported on the coast of California.
The Nazca plate is sliding beneath the South American plate. The two are converging at a rate of about three and a half inches per year.
